It’s not just Karate!

American Dragon Martial Arts Academy in Coral Springs is teaching much more than  Karate. They proved that on Saturday, September 29th, when all the students, their families, and staff participated in a stellar event, a Board Break A Thon, to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The goal was to break 3,000 boards in 30 minutes, and raise 10,000 dollars for the foundation.

When Macey Geller, age 5, a student at the academy, was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes last year, this academy sprang into action, and raised 2,500 dollars with a Kick A Thon. They more than doubled that with this event.

“We had such a huge turn out from our students and their families participating, we were able to break all 3,000 boards in only 16 minutes!” reports Helana Cauliffe, Director of American Dragon. “Doing events like this not only helps the J.D.R.F., it also works to instill a sense of pride in giving your time and effort to help others, which is an important aspect of our program. Next year we will strive to break 6,000!”

So far, they have raised 6,200 dollars. Donations will be accepted throughout the month of October.  Call (954) 255-6545 or stop in at 4688 Coral Ridge Drive for more information. To see more on Macey Geller and the event, log onto www.NBC6.net and click on the Spirit Of South Florida.
